About this event

Feras Charestan

Born in 1982 to a Syriac family in Al-Hasakeh in the North-East of Syria, where many Syriacs lived before the current civil war in Syria. Most ofthem originally came from Tur Abdin and its near-by areas in today’s Turkey

when massacres and persecution befell them in the 1910’s and 20’s. Cherastan finished his study of Qanun performance at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus in 2006, where he started to teach in 2007. Before graduation, he had already started to perform with well-known artists and orchestras in Syria and abroad.

He took part in lots of studio recordings in Syria and Lebanon with famous singers and musicians such as Fairuz. In 2009 He recorded a CD titled (Eh Fi Amal) and performed with her in many concerts, 2010 and 2011 in Beirut at Beil theater, 2011 in Amsterdam at Royal Theater Carré.

 

He accompaneid Marcel Khalife in his Al Mayadeen Ensemble in Morecco, United Arab Emirates, Austria, Tunisia ,Lebanon and USA and He recorded a CD titled (Fall of the moon) in 2012

 

He also participated Ziad Rahbani in concert in Damascus, whose live-recording later became a CD “Ziyad Rahbani: Live at Damascus Citadel 2008” (Duniaphone 2008).

 

Charestan performed as a soloist with the Syrian National Symphon Orchestra based in Damascus, In 2004 performed with the Syrian Orchestra in the opening of Damascus Opera and in 2006 he accompanied the Orchestra in tour in Italy.

He currently performs with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra based in Doha on regular basis. In 2008 he played with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of world- renowned Maestro Lorin Maazel.

In 2009 he toured with the Orchestra to performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, theater des Champs-Elysees in Paris, La Scala in Milan,Teatro Massimo in Palermo and at the Royal Albert Hole in London.

Currently he is one of the Master Musicians in Aga Khan trust for culture (Music Initiative).And he performed a lot of concerts and workshops with them around the globe and the last participation with them was playing one of mycompositions in the opening of the Aga Khan Music Awards in Lisbon.

 

 Since 2014, he has lived in Sweden, where he obtained Master’s degree from the Folk Music Department at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in 2018.  Currently away from Syria, he takes part of artistic projects such as “Souriana project”. While performing with musicians from Sweden and other countries, he performs Syriac music, sacred and secular, in Sweden and other European countries for his fellow Syriacs living in the diaspora.
