Terribly Human

The show is in three languages: Arabic, English and Hebrew. It is accompanied by subtitles in English and German.

One day, a group of young people arrive, stand and look into the courtyards of two couples living their lives in their own house and garden. The ‘others’ are silent, just opening their mouths, but their silence undermines the routine of life for both couples. Silence turns into action and triggers primal fears and hatred. Violence is inevitable.

Ofira Henig developed a unique, innovative artistic vision and acquired worldwide renown. She was one of the most prominent theatre directors in Israel before concentrating her work internationally.

In 2011 she took a dominant part in the artists` protest against the obligation to perform in the occupied territories. As the only artistic director of a theatre who went out to protest, she endangered the government and municipal support and was fired from her position. Since then, she refuses to work with any government support.

Henig: ”At some point I understood what today is taken for granted - like my compass. Artistic perception and political worldview cannot remain `opinions`. It`s a way of life.”

In Berlin, OFIRA HENIG is best known for being a regular guest at the FIND festival, and for teaching and creating at the Barenboim-Said Academy and Pierre Boulez Hall.

Both, Henig and Khalifa Natour have collaborated with PETER BROOK who hosted their work in his theatre. After reading Gilad Evron’s theatre book, he commented on it as follows:

"This title sounds like a Koan. These words "terribly human" cover all the richness and dangers we humans face. Gilad Evron – sadly gone too soon – confronts us with what is the source of terrible human suffering, which takes so many different forms, visible and invisible, and is called racism. (…Theatre is a form that allows situations and images to develop. In this play, the author imagined a basic situation that gets under your skin, because in its very simplicity it is a surprising and implacable situation.”

Die Inszenierung ist dreisprachig: Arabisch, Englisch und Hebräisch. Es gibt Übertitelungen in englischer und deutscher Sprache.

Die neue Produktion des manmaRo Project beschäftigt sich mit der Perspektive “der Anderen” und einer breit gefassten Definition des “Othering”. Eines Tages erscheint eine Gruppe junger Menschen und schaut auf zwei Paare, die ein Leben mit eigenem Haus und Garten leben. Die Anderen schweigen. Sie öffnen nur ihren Mund. Aber ihr Schweigen unterminiert die Routine der beiden Paare. Das Schweigen der Anderen wird zur Tat und legt archaische Gefühle von Angst und Hass frei. Gewalt ist unvermeidlich.

OFIRA HENIG entwickelte eine einzigartige, innovative künstlerische Vision und erlangte weltweites Renommee. Sie war eine der bekanntesten Theaterregisseur;innen in Israel, bevor sie ihre Arbeit international ausrichtete.

Im Jahr 2011 beteiligte sie sich maßgeblich an den Künstlerprotesten gegen die Aufführungspflicht in den besetzten Gebieten. Als einzige künstlerische Leiterin eines Theaters, die auf die Straße ging, um zu protestieren, riskierte sie die staatliche und städtische Förderung und wurde von ihrem Posten entlassen. Seitdem weigert sie sich, mit staatlicher Unterstützung zu arbeiten.

Henig: “Irgendwann verstand ich, was heute selbstverständlich erscheint - es wurde mein Kompass: Künstlerische Wahrnehmung und politische Einstellung können keine ‘Meinungen’ bleiben, sondern es ist eine Art zu leben.”

In Berlin ist sie vor allem als regelmäßiger Gast beim FIND-Festival bekannt. Zudem unterrichtet und wirkt sie an der Barenboim-Said-Akademie und im Pierre-Boulez-Saal.

Sowohl Henig als auch Khalifa Natour haben mit PETER BROOK zusammengearbeitet, der ihre Arbeit in seinem Theater gezeigt hat. Nachdem er das Theaterbuch von Gilad Evron gelesen hatte, kommentierte Brook es wie folgt:
