ABOUT THIS EVENTThis event with Professor Chomsky is a unique one, as it is the first Q&amp;A with the distinguished American linguist, philosopher, and activist in Austria. In addition, university staff at the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences will have the privilege of interacting with the world-renowned intellectual in the form of a lively Q and A. The Q&amp;A session will include questions from the fields of linguistics, political science, and philosophy.Professor Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, historian, social critic, political activist, and a leading critic of U.S. foreign policy, neoliberalism, and contemporary state capitalism. He is considered the founder of modern linguistics, having published over 150 books throughout his career, including the ground-breaking titles Syntactic Structures, Language and Mind, Aspects of the Theory of Syntax, and The Minimalist Program, each of which has made distinct contributions to the development of the field. Noam Chomsky is one of the most cited scholars in modern history and arguably the most important intellectual alive today. He is also an important figure in analytical philosophy and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He holds a joint appointment as Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Laureate Professor at the University of Arizona. Further examples of his publications, which cover a broad range of topics such as linguistics, war, politics, and mass media, including On Language, Understanding Power, American Power, and the New Mandarins, For Reasons of State, Problems of Knowledge and Freedom, Objectivity and Liberal Scholarship, Towards a New Cold War, The Essential Chomsky, On Anarchism, The Chomsky-Foucault Debate (with Michel Foucault), and The Withdrawal: Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and the Fragility of U.S. Power (with Vijay Prashad), all of which were published by The New Press. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.L﻿earn more: <a href="https://chomsky.info/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://chomsky.info/</a> About the organizers and moderators: José Manuel Santana is a Dominican economist, specialist in Technology and Development and is the Executive Director of the Dominican Republic International Commission of Science and Technology (CIACT) with the rank of ambassador. He attended the Executive Information Technology Management program at Columbia University in New York City, and since 2003 he has become a research affiliate at MIT and has been invited to participate in ground-breaking research with some of the foremost experts in the world across various disciplines to further scientiﬁc, educational and technological initiatives at MIT. Prominent among these ﬁgures are Professor Noam Chomsky, Nicholas Negroponte (MIT Media Lab), Daniel Engels, Seymour Papert, Joseph Stiglitz, and former MIT President Susan Hockﬁeld. As the Executive Director of the CIACT, he has developed important initiatives in science, technology, and education, including the ‘One Laptop Per Child’ initiative and ‘Kids Lab’, designed to provide access to digital learning opportunities for disenfranchised youth and underserved demographics across the country. Upon the initial launch of the program, 6,000 computers were provided to 250 national public education institutions. He has delivered lectures on technology, development, and education at many different institutions, such as Harvard University, Yale University, and MIT, as well as at The International Computer Learning Conference in Austria.Victoria Berende has work experience in the field of linguistics at the University of Vienna (Team Univ.-Prof. Dr. Elton Prifti) and as a foreign language consultant at the Embassy of the Principality of Liechtenstein in Austria. She came into contact with languages at a very young age and speaks German, Romanian, English, and French, and has good knowledge of Italian and Spanish. As she has a lot of experience with learning processes and learning strategies and would like to pass this on to others, Victoria has also decided to teach in the private sector, where she teaches a very broad audience, ranging from students to diplomats. Her teaching is very dynamic, making it possible to show similarities and interferences between the different languages and thus helping learners to achieve success faster. Within one of the programs of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research, she was selected to teach German as a second language in Strasbourg, France. Her focus in the field of linguistics lies in language-learning theories, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, and critical discourse analysis. She has co-organized many conferences in the field of multilingualism and film studies, both in Austria and abroad.
