About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

In this 2-part lecture workshop series, I'll use six very different etudes from Joachim Andersen's Op. 37 "Die Kleine Capricen" to illustrate how we can apply knowledge gained from historical performance practice to make playing these pieces wonderfully enjoyable.

Although technically not very demanding, these short and concise etudes provide an ideal platform for understanding phrasing and also give a wealth of space for personal creativity. You might be tempted to program some of these for a future concert!

I'm especially reaching out to those who might be curious about historical performance but don't know where to start. In fact, you neither have to play on a period flute, nor is it only about baroque music. I was surprised and thankful to see how my knowledge in historical style and aesthetics opened up new perspectives for me in much later repertoire, which made playing them all the more fun and exciting!

If you're unable to attend live, a recording of the session will be made available to all registrants after the workshop.

What you will learn:

  • Essential concepts in phrasing and musical gestures, and how to translate that into flute-playing
  • Understanding compositional elements and structures
  • Playing techniques which may not be widely taught in traditional modern flute-playing
  • Expanding your expressive capabilities
  • Going beyond the notation and creating your own meaningful interpretation of the music

Schedule of Workshops:

PART I takes place on April 21, 2024 and includes the C major, B minor, and A minor etudes

PART II takes place on April 28, 2024 and includes the D major, F# minor, and G# minor etudes

Both modern and historical flutists are warmly welcomed! Bring your flute.

The recording of the session will be made available to all registrants afterwards.
