„Diversity is Canada's Strength“ - der Titel der Rede von Justin Trudeau vom 26. November 2015 in London fasst das Selbstverständnis vieler Kanadier und die Art und Weise, wie sich Kanada der Welt präsentiert, treffend zusammen. In einer Zeit der Zunahme fremdenfeindlicher, antagonistischer und rassistischer Tendenzen erscheint das Konzept von Diversität vielversprechend. Diversität ist seit jeher ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der kanadischen Gesellschaft, angefangen bei den kulturell vielfältigen indigenen Völkern, deren Geschichte mehr als 12.000 Jahre zurückreicht. Vor dem Hintergrund der europäischen Expansion, des Kolonialismus und der Migrationen scheint es naheliegend, dass die kanadische Bevölkerung immer heterogener geworden ist. Heute regen Diversität in Bezug auf Religionen, Ethnien und Identitäten, der französische und englische Dualismus sowie neuzeitliche Migrationsphänomene und das sich daran anschließende Diversitätsmanagement regionaler und nationaler Organe zum Nachdenken über die gesellschaftliche Diversität Kanadas an – um nur einige Aspekte zu nennen.

Das Konzept von Diversität bleibt umstritten; nicht nur als Versuch, die sozialen Realitäten einer heterogenen Gesellschaft abzubilden, sondern auch als Bestandteil politischer, sozialer, bildungspolitischer, historischer und unternehmerischer Praktiken. Die Konferenz "Diversität in/von/um Kanada" bietet Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen ein Forum für konstruktive Diskussionen und Networking. Die Teilnehmer sind eingeladen, ihre laufende Forschung im Themenfeld der Diversität in Kanada vorzustellen und ihre Ideen mit Kolleg*innen und interessierten Gästen auszutauschen und zu diskutieren.

Wir laden fortgeschrittene Masterstudent*innen und Doktorand*innen aller Forschungsbereiche mit Anknüpfungspunkten an Kanada-Studien ein, ihre Vorschläge auf Englisch, Französisch oder Deutsch einzureichen. Die Teilnehmer sind aufgerufen, entweder einen kurzen Konferenzvortrag (12 Minuten) oder ein wissenschaftliches Poster auf der Grundlage ihrer Masterarbeit oder ihres Dissertationsthemas vorzuschlagen.

Mögliche Themen sind unter anderem:

• Diversität in der Politik und den internationalen Beziehungen Kanadas

• Bezüge von Identität und Diversität in der kanadischen Gesellschaft, Politik oder Geschichte

• Historische Dimensionen und Entwicklungen der Diversität in Kanada

• Anthropologische Perspektiven auf die Diversität in Kanada

• (Übersetzungen von) Diversität in Kanadas Literatur, Filmen und anderen Künsten

• Diversität in der kanadischen (Kultur-)Geographie

• Die Bedeutung von Diversitätskonzepten für kanadische Indigenen Studien

• (Der Umgang mit) Diversität von Sprache und Kommunikation in Kanada

Bitte reichen Sie Ihre Vorschläge, entweder ein Abstract für Ihren Konferenzvortrag (max. 250 Wörter) oder eine Beschreibung Ihrer geplanten Posterpräsentation (max. 150 Wörter), als PDF ein. Bitte fügen Sie einen kurzen Lebenslauf (max. eine Seite) bei. Eine eindeutige Relevanz sowohl für das Konferenzthema als auch für das Feld der Kanada-Studien ist ausschlaggebend für erfolgreiche Einreichungen. Die Vorträge und Poster sollten auf ein interdisziplinäres Publikum zugeschnitten sein. Es können sowohl sich in Arbeit befindliche Forschungen als auch bereits publizierte Forschungsergebnisse präsentiert werden.

Interdisciplinary Approaches to Canadian Diversity

“Diversity is Canada’s Strength”—the title of Justin Trudeau’s address in London on 26 November 2015 —poignantly summarizes many Canadians’ self-image and how Canada presents itself to the world. In a time of increasingly xenophobic, antagonistic and racist tendencies, the idea of diversity seems promising. Generally, diversity has always been a key component of Canadian society, beginning with the culturally diverse Aboriginal peoples, whose history reaches back more than 12,000 years. In the course of European expansion, colonialism and migrations, one could argue that Canada’s population has become ever more heterogeneous. Today, a diversity of religions, ethnicities and identities, the French and English dualism, as well as modern migration phenomena and subsequent diversity management by regional and federal governments invite reflections on societal diversity in Canada—to name only a few aspects.

The concept of diversity remains contested not only as an attempt of describing the social realities of a heterogeneous population, but also as part of political, social, educational, historical and business practices. Thus, the conference “Diversity in/of/around Canada” offers a forum for constructive discussions and networking among emerging scholars. Participants are invited to present their ongoing research on topics related to diversity in Canada and exchange and discuss their ideas with colleagues and interested guests.

We invite advanced master students and doctoral students of all research fields connected to Canadian Studies to submit proposals in English, French, or German. Participants are called upon to propose either a short conference presentation (12 minutes) or a poster based on their master’s thesis or dissertation topic.

Possible subjects include, but are not limited to

• Diversity in Canadian politics and Canada’s international relations

• Relations of identity and diversity in Canadian society, politics or history

• Historical dimensions and developments of diversity in Canada

• Anthropological perspectives on diversity in Canada

• (Translations of) diversity in Canadian literature, film and other arts

• Diversity in Canadian (cultural) geography

• The relevance of diversity conceptions for Canadian Indigenous Studies

• (Handling) diversity of language and communication in Canada

Please submit your proposals, either an abstract for your conference presentation (max. 250 words) or a description of your planned poster presentation (max. 150 words), as a PDF. Please include a short CV (max. one page). Successful proposals must be clearly relevant to both the conference topic as well as Canadian Studies. Papers and posters should be suited for an interdisciplinary audience. They may present works in progress or published research results.

« Diversity is Canada’s Strength » - le titre du discours tenu par Justin Trudeau le 26 novembre 2015 à Londres résume bien l'image de soi de nombreux.ses Canadien.ne.s et la façon de laquelle le Canada se présente au monde. Dans un temps dans lequel les tendances xénophobes, antagonistes et racistes se multiplient, le concept de diversité semble prometteur. La diversité a toujours été un élément essentiel de la société canadienne, à commencer par les peuples indigènes à cultures diverses, dont l'histoire remonte à plus de 12 000 ans. Dans le contexte de l'expansion européenne, du colonialisme et des migrations, il semble logique que la population canadienne soit devenue de plus en plus hétérogène. Aujourd'hui, la diversité en termes de religions, d'ethnies et d'identités, le dualisme français et anglais, ainsi que les phénomènes migratoires modernes et, par conséquent, la gestion de la diversité par des organismes régionaux et nationaux, encouragent la réflexion sur la diversité sociale du Canada – pour ne citer que quelques aspects.

Le concept de diversité reste controversé ; non seulement comme une tentative de refléter les réalités sociales d'une société hétérogène, mais aussi comme un élément des pratiques politiques, sociales, éducatives, historiques et d’affaires. La conférence « Diversité au/du/autour du Canada » offre aux jeunes chercheur.e.s un forum de discussion constructif et d’établissement de réseaux. Les participant.e.s sont invité.es à présenter leurs recherches en cours sur la diversité au Canada et à échanger et discuter de leurs idées avec des collègues et des invité.e.s intéressé.e.s.

Nous invitons les étudiant.e.s avancé.e.s en master et les doctorant.e.s de tous les domaines de recherche liés aux études canadiennes à soumettre leurs propositions en anglais, français ou allemand. Les participant.e.s sont invité.e.s à proposer une courte présentation soit d’une conférence (12 minutes), soit d’un poster basé sur le sujet de leur mémoire de maîtrise ou de leur thèse.

Parmi les sujets possibles, citons :

• La diversité dans la politique canadienne et les relations internationales du Canada

• Des rapports de et entre l'identité et la diversité dans la société, la politique ou l'histoire du Canada

• Des dimensions historiques et l’évolution de la diversité au Canada

• Des perspectives anthropologiques sur la diversité au Canada

• (Des traductions de) la diversité dans la littérature, le cinéma et les autres arts canadiens

• La diversité dans la géographie (culturelle) canadienne

• L'importance des concepts de diversité pour les études autochtones canadiennes

• (La gestion de) la diversité des langues et de la communication au Canada

Veuillez soumettre vos propositions, soit un résumé de votre conférence (max. 250 mots), soit une description de votre poster à présenter (max. 150 mots), sous forme de PDF. Veuillez inclure un bref curriculum vitae (une page maximum). Une pertinence claire du sujet proposé et pour le sujet de la conférence et pour les études canadiennes est cruciale pour la réussite d’une soumission. Les présentations et les posters doivent convenir à un public interdisciplinaire. Les recherches en cours et les résultats de recherches déjà publiés peuvent être présentés.
