About this event

  • 4 hours

In this discussion, two renowned designers, two institutional directors, and an artist reflect on visions of the intersections of art and design. What emerges when art and design intertwine? What new forms could evolve from such intersectionality? How could art, design, and/or their intermingling contribute to creating a better future in the cultural sphere but also in the general public? Moderated by nomad writer and art critic Kimberly Bradley, this intercultural, interdisciplinary discussion invites participants and listeners to consider potentials from multiple perspectives.

Inspired by, and in the context of, the long-running exhibition SITZUNG by designer Martino Gamper on view in the atrium of Haus der Kunst, this discussion aims to define, but also redefine, contemporary art and design and explore the historical perspectives and fluid barriers between the multiple facets of both disciplines. Participants will explore the fields’ theories and philosophies, and discuss strategies for showcasing interdisciplinarity in cultural institutions, and fostering cooperation between the fields.

The talk also delves into cross-institutional collaboration, potential synergies between western and nonwestern knowledge bases, and new challenges such as digital interdisciplinarity. Taking a cross-European perspective as a point of departure (speakers come from Italy, Germany, and Kosovo), the discussion aims to provide valuable insights into culture’s global dynamics, now and in the future.

The event is realized by Haus der Kunst and nomad magazine. It is financed by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development.
