About this event
GRANSHAN “Signs of the times”, Two-Day-Hybrid Conference
Letters surround us, and permeate our identities. The richness of typographic forms reflects the diversity of our histories: type brings us together, and gives depth and nuance to what distinguishes us. Type bridges past and future, geographical spaces and cultural domains, like no other element of our culture.
Friday, the 20th May, will have a more technical focus as the already known TypeTechMeetUp with a wonderful line-up of speakers, such as Bianca Berning, Nadine Chahine, Elena Ramirez, Luke Prowse, Abeera Zishan and more. The MeetUp will explore topics such as the power of variable and colour fonts, blockchain technology, web typography in multiscript domains, legibility & technology and more.
Then on Saturday the conference shifts to exploring the big and small questions that concern the typographic community and type users alike – daily matters and global concerns. Speakers include Peter Bil'ak, Anette Lenz, José Scaglione, Bahia Shebab, Sonja Knecht, and more. Thematic sessions touch on topics such as multiscript design, endangered scripts/alphabets, and type as a cultural asset and identification anchor.
During the conference on Saturday, the winners and their projects of the 12th GRANSHAN Type Design Competition 2021–2022 will be celebrated. With big words, small appetizers and music. Open end.

On both days during the breaks, we'll be playing a selection of vintage films that showcase the technologies and processes of printing, journalism, and typography made available by Doug Wilson's project Printingfilms.
