Curious about DJing and ready to try it Yourself?

Behind the Decks is a beginner-friendly DJ workshop created especially for FLINTA* people who want to explore DJing in a relaxed, supportive and inclusive environment. Whether You’re completely new to DJing or have already experimented a little, this is a space to learn, ask questions, get curious & build confidence behind the decks.

Hosted by Laura Mönks, a Dutch DJ with over five years of experience who moved to Berlin last year to immerse herself in the city’s music scene, the workshop is all about sharing knowledge, celebrating music & making DJing feel more accessible.

We’ll take things step by step, starting with the basics of DJing and getting familiar with the equipment. You’ll learn how to navigate the decks, understand the fundamentals of mixing and begin experimenting with Your own transitions.

There’s no pressure to get everything right — the idea is to explore, practise & learn at Your own pace.

You will learn the core technical skills needed for Your first transition:

* Getting familiar with the decks — understanding the equipment and what each control does.
* The basics of beatmatching — learning how to bring two tracks together in tempo.
* Cueing and track selection — preparing Your next track and finding music that works together.
* Track structure and phrasing — understanding how tracks are built and when to bring the next one in.
* Your first transitions — putting the basics into practice and experimenting with mixing.

The workshop will be flexible and participant-led, with room to adapt to everyone’s needs, questions and experience levels. We’ll keep it approachable, hands-on and fun, taking things one step at a time.

EQUIPMENT:

We’ll use the DJ equipment available at the venue. No personal equipment is needed.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Nothing but Your curiosity and a love of music! No previous DJ experience, music theory knowledge or technical skills are required. If You’d like to bring Your own music on a USB stick, You’re welcome to.

GET YOUR HANDS ON THE DECKS:

This workshop is about doing, not just watching. Everyone will have the opportunity to get behind the decks, experiment with mixing and practise the techniques we cover in a supportive environment.

ABOUT ME — LAURA MÖNKS

Laura Mönks is a Dutch DJ based in Berlin, with over five years of experience behind the decks. Drawn to deep basslines, driving grooves and rhythms influenced by Latin and tribal sounds, her sets move between hypnotic energy and playful, percussive selections.

After moving to Berlin last year, she has been developing her presence in the city’s electronic music scene. Alongside playing, Laura is passionate about sharing her love of music and helping others discover the joy of DJing. She wants to make the first steps behind the decks feel welcoming, accessible and exciting — especially for FLINTA* people who may not always feel that the DJ booth is a space for them.
