Workshop Video - Understanding Hotteterre's Preludes
Overview
This is the recording of the original workshop which took place on Sept 13th, 2025. Once registered, you'll be able to access the workshop video in your Eventbrite account.
Jacques Hotteterre's "L'Art de Preluder" is literally one of the first collections that really got me hooked onto playing baroque music on the traverso. It was an eye-opener for me to see how imaginative these miniature pieces of music can be. Ranging from easy to moderately difficult, learning these preludes will advance your traverso playing skills in so many ways, from understanding phrasing, improved musicality, to refining your technique in bringing out the essence of the French baroque style.
We will study a few of Hotteterre's preludes and, if time permits, also look at preludes from other composers such as Boismortier to get a different perspective. Note that this workshop is not about how to compose or improvise a prelude, but rather laying down a foundation which can then lead to improvising later on.
Both modern and historical flutists are warmly welcomed! BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT.
**We will be reading from the facsimile copy of "L'Art de Preluder", which means that the notation is in French violin clef. You may find modern transpositions online.
What you will learn:
- How to phrase in a way that's stylish and musical, yet also free and imaginative sounding
- Basic classical music theory to get you become more independent in your interpretation
- Training in air management and flexibility in sound production, being aware of differences between shaping and not shaping.
- Preludes by other composers worth studying

What others say:
"Teddie's workshops are a fantastic learning experience! She creates such a friendly environment and explains things in such a clear manner that the workshops can apply to anyone at any level. Her knowledge of the Baroque era and her perspectives are inspiring and very valuable!" - Elizabeth Pogue, USA
"Teddie's workshops on French Baroque music are a rare gift! She fills them with pertinent research materials, and demonstrates passages from manuscript facsimiles. This is the real deal; in a few short minutes, students are learning how to make fine adjustments that transform straightforward playing into something nuanced and shimmering. Teddie's own playing is just beautiful, and the examples are always perfectly chosen. While I've a long way to go, these workshops have certainly helped my playing, and I would heartily recommend them to anyone." - Joanna Demers, University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music
"Teddie was very organized and inspiring. I would love to keep learning more and if I have the chance to do it in person one day. Thank you very much Teddie."
