This year’s transmediale Marshall McLuhan lecture will be delivered by Megan Boler of the Department of Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto. As a highly interdisciplinary scholar, Boler has focused on the social implications of technology, including the interrelations between media, democracy, and education. In her lecture Truth as Event: The Affective Politics of Belief, Boler will discuss her latest research on how we entered the so-called “post-truth” era, in which "emotions matter more than facts in determining belief." The lecture explores the processes that gave rise to this era, and asks which roles spectatorship and media—particularly social media—might play in producing the emotions that underlie belief and, in turn, constitute today’s version of truth. The talk is followed by a conversation with Faisal Devji, a historian whose work has dealt with ethics and violence in a globalized world.

Die diesjährige transmediale Marshall McLuhan Lecture wird am 30. Januar 2018 von Megan Boler gehalten, Professorin für Social Justice Education an der University of Ontario.

Die interdisziplinär arbeitende Wissenschaftlerin konzentriert sich auf die gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen von Technologie einschließlich der Verflechtungen zwischen Medien, Demokratie und Bildung. In ihrer Lecture Truth as Event: The Affective Politics of Belief spricht sie über ihre neuesten Untersuchungen zu der Frage, wie wir im sogenannten postfaktischen Zeitalter angekommen sind, in dem „Emotionen in der Bestimmung von Ansichten mehr zählen als Fakten“. Der Vortrag erforscht die Prozesse, die zu diesem Zeitalter geführt haben und thematisiert die Rolle von Medien und Zuschauerschaft – insbesondere in den sozialen Medien – in Bezug auf das Auslösen von Emotionen, die diesen Ansichten zugrunde liegen und ihrerseits die heutige Version von „Wahrheit“ begründen. Nach dem Vortrag folgt ein Gespräch mit dem Historiker Faisal Devji, dessen Arbeit sich mit Ethik und Gewalt in einer globalisierten Welt auseinandersetzt.
