How Our Breath Shapes Our Inner State

How we breathe directly affects our autonomic nervous system and physiology in the moment, which shapes our perception, emotional state, and cognitive function. Over time, our habitual breathing patterns establish a baseline — a default state for our nervous system, mood, and thinking. Fast, shallow breathing, for example, correlates with high anxiety. By changing this pattern, we can shift not just our state in the moment, but our baseline over time.

We Can Control Our Inner State Through Breath

Breath is the only function of our autonomic nervous system we can consciously control. Because the nervous system is interconnected, deliberately changing our breathing pattern shifts our entire nervous system state — and consequently our perception, emotional state, and cognitive function. With consistent practice, we can even rewire our default breathing pattern — and with it, our inner state baseline.

What This Program Offers

This 6-week program teaches how to develop a conscious breathing habit using the Integrated Expansive Breath method — a practical, science-based approach developed through 15+ years of personal practice, training in established techniques like Hatha Yoga pranayama and functional breathing, and research into how breath influences nervous system function.

We'll develop greater access to calm focus as our default state, a more reliable ability to self-regulate under stress, and improved clarity in decision-making.

The central principle is that breathing techniques create the most lasting change when they integrate into our daily life, not just our practice time. We'll focus on slow-paced breathing, conscious muscular control, and discrete techniques we can use anywhere, anytime — without anyone noticing.

What We'll Work On

Over six weeks, we'll progressively develop:

  • Breath Awareness — Learn to notice our natural breathing patterns and how they connect to our inner state
  • Breath Control and Capacity — Develop deliberate control of our breathing and access to our full breathing range to promote calm alertness
  • Daily Integration — Build a practical routine that fits seamlessly into our lives, establishing breathing as a natural part of how we move through our days

What to Expect

The practice builds progressively, with each week establishing a foundation for the next. By the end of the program, we'll have developed a reliable tool — a tangible shift in both our moment-to-moment state and our baseline — that we can access anywhere, anytime.

Program Details

Time commitment:

  • 1 hour/week live online session (recording available after)
  • 5–30 minutes daily self-paced practice (gradually increasing, with guided audio support)
