Playing Beyond Notation: Bach, Rameau, Corelli

In this interactive online workshop, I'll be using three pieces to demonstrate how music notation can only suggest how the music should go on a very basic level, and that there's so much more that needs to be understood and brought forth in our interpretation of it. Especially in baroque music, where we often have relatively "simpler" note values and/or repetitive rhythms, it can seem trivial or boring at first sight.

The following pieces we'll be looking at may not appear advanced , but it is exactly the understanding of style, phrasing, and aesthetics that will truly bring endless enjoyment for the performer as well as do expressive justice to the music:

-"Andante" from J.S. Bach's Sonata in E minor for Flute and Continuo, BWV 1034,

-"Musette" from J.Ph. Rameau's Opera ""Les fêtes d'Hébé", arr. by M. Blavet

-"Mvt. II. Allegro" from A. Corelli's Sonata IV in G major, arr. for flute and continuo from his Op. V violin sonatas.

What you will learn:

• Understanding the difference between notation and music
• Clarifications on some myths regarding historical performance
• Finding the gesture in music and play in a way that's stylish and effortless
• Develop more refined hearing to turn "simple" notes into compelling phrases, and expand your enjoyment of the music

Presence at the live session is not required but highly recommended. The session will be recorded and all registrants will have access to the recording for 3 months afterwards. Music and other materials for the workshop will be distributed around one week beforehand.

About Teddie Hwang, founder of "Teddie Talks Traverso"

Teddie Hwang is fascinated by the timbre and vocal qualities of the baroque traverso. Based in Germany, she has a special focus in chamber music and multimedia collaborations. She has given workshops on historical performance at institutions such as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the School of Music at the University of Victoria BC, and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. Teddie studied traverso with Wilbert Hazelzet and received her Master's degree in Historical Flute Performance from the Koninklijk Conservatorium Netherlands. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Music and Germanic Studies from Indiana University USA, where she studied modern flute with Kathryn Lukas and graduated with high distinction. She is a winner of the Baroque Flute Artist Competition held by the National Flute Association of America. She has also adjudicated for its competitions and is currently a member of their Historical Flutes Committee.

Teddie is a member of Early Music America, The National Flute Association, and the Kulturkreis Wallauer Fachwerk. She also participates yearly in the REMA European Early Music Day with her special talks and programs.

Despite its minimalistic simplicity, the above "Musette" by J. Ph. Rameau is a beautiful example of how we need to look past the notation to bring out the true essence and expression of the music.
