HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management reacts to current developments in society and economy. The virtual HHL Expert Talk series addresses latest and key topics in its research and academic programs to a broad audience and offers an open and further education and know-how transfer to the whole HHL community and beyond.
The “nature” of conflicts
Robert (Todd) Becker who lived and worked most of his life in Europe was not only the first US Consul General in Leipzig after reunification but also participated in several international election observations organized by the OSCE will focus in his speach on the following points:
- The “nature” of conflicts
- How people approach conflicts and how this approach may/can lead to conflict resolution
- Rules of the game / social rules / national rules
- Current challenges of national states / a snapshot on the current political situation in the EU/Ukraine/Russia
- Summary and take-aways
Afterwards, we will have a Q&A session.

The Expert Talk is taking place onsite at the Schmalenbach building on our campus Jahnallee 59, 04109 Leipzig. For those, who cannot attend we offer online participation via zoom.
About our Expert
Robert (Todd) Becker grew up in Washington D.C. and spent most of his life in Europe, especially in Germany and the Balkans. He continued to study German and Central European history in his master's and doctoral studies. Between 1966 and 2000, Todd served as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. He worked in Athens, Greece and on the Fiji Islands, among others. He spent most of his working life in Berlin, Bonn and Munich. He was mainly concerned with the East-West conflict. In 1990, Robert Becker was appointed Consul General for the Consulate General he reopened in Leipzig. Here, he met his wife Christa and was a co-founder of the International School of Leipzig. Todd has participated in seven international election observations organized by the OSCE, including East Germany in 1990 and West Germany in 2004 as well as in the Ukraine, Belorussia, Montenegro and Croatia. Since 2013, Todd has been giving lectures and seminars at Salisbury University in Maryland.
About our Moderator
Our Expert Talk series is moderated by Sigrid Fischer, HHL’s Director Career and Alumni Relations. Sigrid studied Journalism and Performance Psychology at Indiana University, USA, and at the University of Edinburgh, UK. As an internationally experienced relations expert and moderator, she has been enriching our series since April 2020.
