The Sewing Studio by Bunmi Okon
My Journey Into Fashion ✂️
My love for fashion began during the recession, when I asked myself: If I lost my job, what skill could I rely on? I wanted to do something I truly enjoyed — and that led me to the world of fashion.
I started with a short drawing course at the London College of Fashion, followed by sewing classes with Helen McKenzie, where I learned to use a sewing machine. I went on to complete a Foundation Degree in Fashion Design at Barnet College, winning the Innovative Collection Award, and earned my Fashion Degree (2:1) at the University of Hertfordshire. Along the way, I gained hands-on experience at Kosibah and Ted Baker, and later worked at Mothercare Head Office.
Even while working full-time and raising a family, I always made time to design and sew. Over the years, people began asking me to show them how to sew, which inspired me to open The Sewing Studio by Bunmi Okon in Borehamwood. For the past eight years, I’ve been teaching both children and adults sewing techniques and pattern-cutting skills. I’m always excited to share my creative knowledge and watch others discover the joy of making something with their own hands.
Sewing is more than just creating clothes — it’s a chance to slow down, focus, and connect with yourself. Many of my students find it calming and therapeutic, which is why I’m passionate about promoting mental wellness and wellbeing through my classes. For children, sewing nurtures creativity and problem-solving. For adults, it’s empowering and a beautiful way to unwind from everyday stress.
Whether you’re a complete beginner or simply looking for a new creative outlet, my classes are designed to be fun, friendly, and inspiring.
Come learn, create, and support your wellbeing — one stitch at a time!
