We are delighted to invite you to a tour of the Eagle during its upcoming visit to Kiel, as part of an annual deployment with cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy. The primary mission is training the cadets and officer candidates, but the ship also performs a public relations role for the Coast Guard and the United States including calls at foreign ports as a goodwill ambassador. The US Consulate General in Hamburg has arranged this unique tour for The American Club members and guests. The exact boarding location and details about the program will be sent to registrants closer to the event.
We will provide an afternoon snack in some form - just the details depend on the final location. So bear with us for that, please.
About the Eagle: The ship was built as the German ship “Horst Wessel” in 1936; it served to train German sailors in sail techniques until decommissioned at the start of World War II. The vessel had anti-aircraft armament installed and re-commissioned in 1942, serving for Germany. At the end of the war, Horst Wessel was taken by the U.S. as part of war reparations. Its sister ship, the Gorch Fock is the German Navy’s Sail Training Ship today.

Important: We will know the exact dock of the ship briefly before the event only, for security reasons.
