Description

26.08.2019
Time: 09:15 am
Meeting Point: Alexanderplatz, Berlin

Berlin is a place with unprecedented history. While it is impossible to capture its multifaceted past in just a few days, it’s well worth taking a look at some of its remains.
We’ll be taking you to Berlin-Hohenschönhausen, the memorial that embodies like no other the 44-year history of political persecution in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the German Democratic Republic. A Soviet internment camp was set up here at the end of World War II and subsequently transformed into the main Soviet remand prison for Germany. In the early fifties, the secret police of the SED (the ruling party in the GDR) took over the prison. Until 1990 the Ministry of State Security (MfS) used it as its main remand prison.
Join us for a guided 90min tour to get an idea under what political and artistic oppression the citizens of the German Democratic Republic were living.

Hungry after all that history? We’ll take you to an all-vegan Korean lunch place in Prenzlauer Berg, one of the most picturesque boroughs of the city.
(Not included in the participation fee)

Take some time to lean back and relax: After lunch you will jump on a boat and explore Berlin from the water. The hour-long cruise will take you past many popular sights, following the Spree as it winds through the city center. Landmark buildings such as the House of the World's Cultures, the Government Quarter including the Federal Chancellery, Hauptbahnhof (main station), Friedrichstraße, Berlin Cathedral, Museum Island and Nicholas' Quarter will be on your way, with audio guides providing English commentaries.

In the evening we give you further proof why Berlin is the vegan capital. In 2011, the first all-vegan supermarket chain, Veganz, was established here. Superfoods, meat and dairy alternatives, snacks, candy – no label-checking required when browsing through the aisles. Explore the latest products on the market that cater for convenience buyers and health fans alike. Right above is Avesu, an all-vegan shoe shop.

We’ll finish the day at the East Side Gallery: Stroll along the longest preserved piece of the famous Berlin wall that has been redesigned by more than 100 artists from 21 countries into the longest open-air gallery of the world. The East Side Gallery stands both as a symbol of joy over the end of Germany’s division and as a historical reminder of the inhumanity of the GDR border regime. Today it is one of Berlin's most popular tourist attractions.

After strolling along the gallery in your own pace, you’re free to explore the area. Being in Friedrichshain, the ‘Kiez’ (borough) of Berlin with probably the highest density of phenomenal vegan food options, we highly recommend to dive into the small streets and round off the day in one of the cozy restaurants in this area. To help you choose, we’ll provide you with a list of good places to go.
Our dinner suggestion: Secret Garden, Berlin’s first vegan sushi place. Just around the corner this place is like a mini holiday, away from the business of the city into a beautiful garden setting. Besides sushi they also offer dumplings, fusion bowls and soups.

Please write an email (lea.stockmeier@proveg.com) if you are interested in having dinner with the group, so we can book a group table.
(Not included in the participation fee)

Please note: We’ll be moving around by public transport. While this certainly adds to the authentic experience of the city, this tour might not be suitable for people with claustrophobic tendencies, as vehicles go underground and can be crammed.
