WHY SHOULD YOU GO?
Many people think of Tiergarten’s 2.5 km of forests, meadows, waterways and lakes as a peaceful retreat from the city centre. But what most people don’t know is that its vast diversity of plants, bushes, and trees offer an extraordinary bounty of food and medicine year-round. This is a perfect chance to explore a whole new (and very tasty) side of the local natural and wild greenery of the area, right in the heart of Berlin.
A local guide will tell us about the natural growing leaves and flowers that are perfectly in season, such as the invasive Japanese knotweed, which can be made into delicious lemony dishes or sauteed like asparagus, or wild hops, whose spring shoots are a wonderful addition to stir-frys. Here you will learn which plants are great for soothing mosquito bites, which plants help digestion, and which plants you can add to your next pesto. What makes foraging so exciting is that once you know what to look for, you will be seeing the plants everywhere, whether in your neighborhood or on a hike! Most importantly, we will learn what can be eaten and what should be avoided - the most essential skill for any forager.
During the tour, there will be plenty of time to relax, take in the beautiful surroundings and explore the area, finishing with an ice cream or cake in a local cafe right on the edge of one of Tiergarten’s lakes.
