Beschreibung

- Because seeing the nanoworld is understanding, and understanding builds the knowledge of our society -

Currently, the new materials for the most innovative technological applications are being synthesised at the nanoscale (nanotubes, nanoparticles, quantum structures, etc.). The audience will see how with advanced electron microscopy tools we can observe low-dimensional nanostructures such as nanowires, quantum dots and viruses or bacteria.

We will explain the technological path that has been followed since Galileo's time to develop microscopes, and as we have now reached resolutions below the angstrom (10-10 meters), being able to observe atoms individually. We will see how we can model 3D atomic structures and how this modelling can help us to understand the different properties of nanoobjects on a more macroscopic scale.

We will take a tour from the macroworld to the nanoworld and vice-versa, all illustrated with images, videos and examples to make a pleasant and entertaining explanation, but at the same time highly educational. In parallel, we will also see how the light can be measured at the nanoscale, and how we can design objects from a few atoms (quantum dots) to obtain the optical properties we want.

During the talk, I will also explain how it was my scientific career and the motivation that led me to be a researcher.

Who is Prof. Arbiol?

Prof. Jordi Arbiol graduated in Physics at Universitat de Barcelona (UB) in 1997, where also obtained his PhD (European Doctorate and PhD Extraordinary Award) in 2001. He also worked as Assistant Professor at UB. From 2009 to 2015 he was ICREA Prof. at Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, ICMAB-CSIC.

Since 2015 he is ICREA Prof. at Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2) and Leader of the Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group. Since 2017 he is President of the Spanish Microscopy Society (SME), was Vice-President from 2013 to 2017 and since 2009 he is Member of its Executive Board.
