Event Details

Each year, the transmediale and CTM festivals jointly offer one of the world's most pertinent, adventurous, and comprehensive reviews of the way new technologies and digital culture are shaping our lives.

Connect Passes allow visitors to attend CTM 2018 from 26 January – 4 February 2018, as well as the transmediale festival weekend, which runs 31 January – 4 February 2018 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt.

transmediaele 2018 face value
Things are what they are—but could they be different?
transmediale 2018 face value is probing the values, as well as the processes of value creation, that have contributed to our present moment of extreme political, economic, and cultural divides. As populism gains traction and reactionary voices grow louder and louder in today's mediasphere and beyond, how can artists, cultural workers, and speculative theorists respond to the current politics of taking things at face value and, at the same time, face their own values? How does one name biases and exploitative mechanisms for what they are, in order to formulate new ways to resist, deconstruct, or move beyond them?

CTM 2018 – TURMOIL
Since its early days, CTM Festival has featured music and art that acts as a mirror for social and political conditions. Our 2018 theme, Turmoil, builds on the insights of 2017’s Fear Anger Love, and continues its inquiry into the potential of sound and music to invigorate resilience and awareness at a time when we have begun normalising the ongoing barrage of political, social and environmental crises and the resulting disquiet that resonates through our on- and offline lives. CTM 2018 explores the state of music and sound practice in the face of a confusing and critical present: What is the sound of turmoil? What are aesthetics of tumult? Which other sonic and musical responses could we conceive of to counter the current overload of agitation?
