Women’s Rights are under attack. Right wing governments, from Trump’s in the USA to Bolsonaro’s in Brazil are trying to roll back the gains made by women in the last 50 years. In Poland, the ruling Law and Justice Party is trying to restrict the already limited right to an abortion. In Germany, the old Nazi paragraph 219a has been used to prosecute doctors like Kristina Hänel for saying that they are willing to perform abortions.

These assaults on our basic human rights have not gone unopposed. In 2016, 150,000 demonstrated in Poland against a previous attack on abortion rights. That year also saw the first women’s strikes in Poland and Argentina. Such initiatives are taking the struggle for women’s liberation onto the offensive.

On March 8th 2019, International Women’s Day will be a public holiday in Berlin for the first time. This will be a time to celebrate our victories, like the legalisation of abortion and gay marriage in Ireland. It will also be a time to reflect on what we have not won yet, and what we need to still do to win equal rights for everyone, irrespective of sex, sexual orientation or class.

What strategy can win? We have seen the rise of the Women’s March and the Women’s Strike (Frauen*Streik). Are these contradictory strategies or do they complement each other? Can we unite all women, or is class unity more important? What is the role of men in the fight for women’s liberation?

As part of our mobilisation for International Women’s Day (Frauen*kampftag in Germany), the LINKE Berlin Internationals is organising a discussion on February 25th. Friederike Benda from Germany and Hanna Grzeskiewicz from Poland will be talking about how can we internationalise the fight for women’s liberation, and learn from each other’s successes and failures. Come and join this debate.

Friederike Benda is active in the Frauen*kampftag alliance and the Frauenstreik committee in Berlin. She is on the LINKE national executive.

Hanna Grzeskiewicz is an active member of the LINKE Berlin Internationals and is involved with various feminist organisations in Berlin including the Berlin Feminist Film Week.
