Looking ahead – Assessing the future regulatory pathway for advertising in online gambling

The German Interstate Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV – Glücksspielstaatsvertrag) has come into operation. For the first time being, licenses have been granted for online gambling.

However, with the issuing of licenses a raft of complex challenges with regard to ancillary provisions have materialized. A bunch of regulations on the type and scope of advertising must be taken into account. Some of these regulations are also highly controversial and have already been the subject of legal disputes – causing substantial legal uncertainty.

In parallel, there is also a political debate about advertising in the sphere of gambling. Several politicians have already urged for more stringent regulation. In addition, sports betting is also affected. In November, the interior ministries of the federal states intend to negotiate the matter.

In our webinar, we address these legal issues by providing an outlook of forthcoming decision-making in the field of advertising in online gambling.
