The annual Otto-Wolff-Lecture

The Otto Wolff Lecture is Amerika Haus e.V. NRW’s annual signature series and was initiated by Baroness Jeane von Oppenheim and the Otto Wolff Foundation, in commemoration of the friendship of Baron Alfred von Oppenheim and Otto Wolff von Amerongen. Both men were successful entrepreneurs, important political figures in the region of Cologne as well as in Germany, and above all they were dedicated transatlanticists. Since the founding of America Haus e.V. NRW in 2007, the Otto Wolff Lecture has been delivered by American senior experts on significant transatlantic topics.

John B. Emerson, the United States Ambassador to Germany during the second term of the Obama administration, is presently Chairman of the American Council on Germany and board member of the German Marshall Fund as well as the Pacific Council on International Policy. In 2010 he was appointed by President Obama to serve on his Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations. In 2015, he was awarded the State Department’s Susan M. Cobb Award for Exemplary Diplomatic Service, which is given annually to one to one non-career ambassador, and in 2017 he received the CIA Medal and the U.S. Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award. John Emerson is, as well, a long-serving member of the Council on Foreign Relations. As a graduate of law, he became a partner in the law firm of Manatt, Phelps, Rothenburg and Phillips. He also served as Los Angeles Chief Deputy City Attorney, followed by joining the Clinton White House as President Clinton‘s deputy assistant, coordinating economic conferences, working on the GATT Uruguay Round Agreement, and the extension of China’s MFN trading status. Ambassador John Emerson became president of Private Client Services for the Capital Group Companies prior to accepting the ambassadorial post in Germany, He is presently Vice Chairman of Capital Group International, Inc., a division of the Capital Group Companies.
