Event description
Join educators from across Europe for this one day workshop. Tania Lattanzio and Anne van Dam are offering one day workshops.

About this Event

Two workshop choices:

1. With Anne van Dam:

PLAY AND LEARNER AGENCY: EXPRESSING, CONSTRUCTING AND NEGOTIATING UNDERSTANDINGS.

Using research quotes and our own connections and experiences, we will consider contemporary theory about young children’s learning and the implications for our practice. A range of strategies will be considered that ensure all children have the opportunity to see themselves as capable and competent, as active powerful contributors to their own experience and that of others. We will think about ways that learning environments can be transformed so children have choices, make decisions and are consulted in decisions that affect them.

KEY AUDIENCE: early childhood educators, coordinators and school leaders

2. With Tania Lattanzio:

DEVELOPING AND PLANNING CONCEPTUAL UNITS TO PROMOTE AGENCY

This one day workshop will look at how to develop units of learning that are contemporary and conceptually focussed, units that provide students with the ‘SO WHAT’ to their learning. It will explore the type of learning we want learners involved in and provide participants with criteria and a framework for developing units of learning that promote learner agency, creativity and innovation. The workshop will also explore how to assess conceptual learning in order to effectively differentiate through the development of rubrics of understanding.

KEY AUDIENCE: Teachers, Teacher Teams, Teacher Leaders, Coaches, Instructional Leaders.

When curriculum content is shifted into a conceptual framework, facts and skills are seen as layers within a more conceptually driven context. Units are developed and analysed to ensure they are significant, compelling and intriguing for students; therefore, students are involved in learning that has purpose and engages them in their learning.

Research indicates that one of the benefits of learning through concepts is that "organizing information into a conceptual framework allows for greater transfer; that is, it allows the student to apply what was learned in new situations and to learn related information more quickly" (Bransford, Brown & Cocking 2000, How people learn: Brain, mind, experience and school, p.17).
