Event description
natureplus Europe Event Series 2021 „How to Build Climate Protection – Sustainable Materials and Carbon Sequestration”

About this event

Join natureplus and its partners for a European-wide event series on “How to Build Climate Protection” from 12 to 22 October 2021. On this page you have the opportunity to book all three online seminars of the organisations natureplus, ASBP and IBO at reduced rates.

Also, in addition, extra site visits and exhibitions can be bought at our partner organisations VIBE and agrodome. For more information take a look at our homepage: www.natureplus.org.

Meet building professionals, academics, and material experts from across Europe. During the web seminars & conferences you will have the chance to learn:

  • About the environmental impacts of the major structural construction materials
  • What advantages bio-based do offer, for example with regards to carbon sequestration and healthy living in general
  • Which Tools and policies help recognise and encourage carbon sequestration

Now, in November 2021, the spotlight will be on Glasgow for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26). Will the world’s leaders be able to accelerate their efforts we so urgently need to achieve the climate targets agreed upon in Paris in 2015?

The role of the construction industry in contributing to climate change must not be underestimated, with the building and construction sector contributing 38% of global CO2 emissions in 2019 (equaling 9.95 Giga tons of CO2!). In order to leverage the sector’s huge carbon reduction potential, we must go further than just improving the operational energy efficiency of buildings. We have to focus on reducing the environmental impacts of building materials, from extraction and manufacture through to end-of-life.

Building Climate Protection

natureplus and the national representatives Agrodome, ASBP, EOS, IBO and VIBE invite you to a 10 day event series focusing on building materials that help build climate protection. Across six events, building experts will discuss how to reduce the environmental impacts of building materials and how to leverage their potential instead for example by carbon sequestration. In the kick-off symposium carbon capture as offered by bio based materials will be the main topic. The Alliance of Sustainable Building Products will reflect on the steps made by major players in the construction products industry regarding environmental impacts by hosting a web seminar called Future Footprints. Finally a discussion among Austrian building professionals will reveal how the Austrian cement industry sees its role in the climate crisis and its contribution to solve it. Site visits and exhibitions finally demonstrate that usability, appealing design and sustainability go hand in hand in ecological building materials, while at the same time being applicable right away.

3 WEB SEMINARS: 12-21 October 2021

1st web seminar: Kick-Off Symposium: "Carbon Capture and Storage for free? "

Date: Tuesday, 12 October, 14:00 – 17:00 CEST

Event promoter: natureplus association

Join natureplus and its partners for a discussion on how tools and legislation are evolving to recognise sequestration, and how policy is being enacted to encourage the uptake of more bio-based materials.

  • Andrew Norton (International Institute for Environment and Development): Sequestration and carbon capture and storage in bio-based materials. How does it work and how do we calculate it? What databases are available?
  • Elodie Mace (Artelia): Dynamic LCA in France; introducing time into LCA
  • Austrian Institute for Building & Ecology (tbc): CO2 Bonus for timber construction

15.30 CEST – Policy

  • Matti Kuittinen (Ministry of the Environment, Finland and Professor of resource-efficient construction, Aalto University): Policy in Finland/Carbon footprint and carbon handprint/possible policy levers
