"Are We Flooded With Images? Making Sense of News Photography in the 21st Century" with David Campbell from World Press Photo, 13th of December 2017

With trillions - yes, trillions - of images being made every year, and billions - yes, billions - of them being shared on social networks, it seems like people the world over are drowning in a flood of pictures of their own making. But is this an accurate account of our global visual economy? What does all this mean for how professional image makers and storytellers operate? And what impact does all this have on the photography of news?

David Campbell is a writer, professor and producer and the current director of communications and engagement at the World Press Photo Foundation, where he is responsible for a team of six who manage the foundation’s communications strategy and execution, including all the online, social and print communications channels.

David began his career as a press secretary for an Australian senator, before completing a PhD in International Relations. For the past twenty five years he has taught visual culture, geography, politics, and multimedia journalism at universities in Australia, Britain, China and United States, most recently as the A. Lindsay O'Connor Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at Colgate University in New York. He filmed "Home," a series of videos for the West End Refugee Service in Newcastle (UK) and produced “Laygate Stories” in collaboration with Peter Fryer. He has authored three academic monographs, written for many photography publications, co-hosted and produced the Multimedia Week podcast and served as the secretary to the World Press Photo General Jury for the 2014 and 2015 contests.

Life at trivago may look different than at other companies. We are rather a ‘glass-half-full’ kind of group. We celebrate our failures along with our successes, because we know it brings us one step closer to a solution. For us, new experiences are what fuel our passionate curiosity. We are hungry to learn more and are big on testing our potential in new situations.

We have figured out that having the right people on your side is pretty important. Every discussion is an opportunity to grow and develop—and we would rather inspire, empower, encourage and nurture others to pursue their dreams and be authentic, rather than control them. This philosophy has created a unique, balanced atmosphere at trivago, which we believe is as organic as it is refreshing.
