After avenging his shocking loss to Andy Ruiz and regaining the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight championships, Anthony Joshua will return to the ring on Saturday to face the challenge of Kubrat Pulev. A win for Joshua would move him one step closer to a mega-fight with WBC champion Tyson Fury to unify all four recognized world championships.
Pulev is getting what is likely his final shot to become world champion. In 2014, he suffered a knockout loss against Wladimir Klitschko in a bout for the IBF title. He has since won eight consecutive fights to earn his latest title shot. At 39 years old, the clock is ticking on Pulev, but the odds remain heavily in favor of Joshua retaining his titles.
There's a lot of action expected on Saturday in London. Be sure you're following all of CBS Sports' coverage of the event, including how you can watch and follow the action live below.
Anthony Joshua defends the WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles today in London, taking on Kubrat Pulev in the main event streaming live on DAZN and also airing on Sky Box Office in the UK.
The full card starts at 1 pm ET. The main event is expected around 5 pm ET. We’ll be here with fight-by-fight results and discussion in the comments during the undercard, and then will have round-by-round, up-to-the-minute updates for Joshua-Pulev right here in the main post area.
This will be Joshua’s first title defense since he took the three belts back from Andy Ruiz Jr right about a year ago in Saudi Arabia. Pulev hasn’t fought since Nov. 2019, when he stayed busy in a win over Rydell Booker.
The card will also see a return for cruiserweight Lawrence Okolie, who faces short notice opponent Nikodem Jezewski, plus two more heavyweight fights in Hughie Fury vs Mariusz Wach and Martin Bakole vs Sergey Kuzmin, and more!
Anthony Joshua is hot favourite to beat Kubrat Pulev tonight - but things didn't go to plan in a pre-fight simulation.
In a shock outcome on legendary video game Fight Night Champion, the Brit was beaten by the Bulgarian in a stunning tenth round KO.
After a long hard slog that saw both men exchange some serious shots in the first nine rounds, Joshua's virtual stamina started to drop.
The Bulgarian slugger batted away Joshua's attempted grabs with a couple of stiff jabs before landing the final blows.
A staggering Joshua dropped his guard before Pulev struck with a vicious left-right hook combo with around two and a half minutes left in the tenth.
Joshua staggered after the left but the right put him face down on the canvas and he was unable to get up as the ref counted him out.
Boxing legend Ricky Hatton believes Anthony Joshua will stop Kubrat Pulev in dramatic fashion.
He said: "Joshua had his wake-up call against Andy Ruiz, and will come in sharp with his jab and power punches.
"We might have a few cagey rounds to start, between two men who both achieved great things as amateurs, but I see Joshua knocking a 39-year-old Pulev out before the sixth round.
"I believe we will see a dramatic statement from Joshua, who wants his next fight to be Tyson Fury."
