Event description
The Scrum Master role is a leadership role that transforms a group of people into a cohesive unit called a team! Learn how!

About this event

Omar McNeil interviews Girish Khullar and they answer your questions in this live talk at the Scrum Master Summit!

In order to be a servant leader to the team with these qualities, Scrum Master needs to a CHEF (Coach, Hands-On, Empathy, and Facilitation). I believe Scrum Master is like a parent to a kid (team) that kid never asked for, it's just that kid is gifted with a particular parent. Just like a parent, throughout their parenthood, justifies why he/she is a right parent to the kid, similarly Scrum Master throughout the team journey justifies why he/she is a right servant-leader to this team. With such accountability, Scrum Master roles need to be demystified to explore a CHEF within themselves.

You will gain knowledge on useful enablers to inculcate during team building, enable participants to understand the lifecycle of a product team and what kind of support structure is required across different stages of this lifecycle. You will understand how to coach teams to not see every conversation as a conflict and even if it's a conflict then how to self-organize to better handle it. To avoid the trap of Scrum Master acting as project coordinators, we will discuss different stances of Scrum Master and how not to be overwhelmed by all these instances.

We explore series of concepts and discussing corresponding real-life scenarios to discuss the agility in the Scrum Master role. I will have a pre-recorded talk of 30 minutes, it will be run like this

  1. Introduction to Scrum Master and falling into the trap of being a project coordinator.
  2. Explore CHEF skills within Scrum Master and the necessity of each skill.
  3. Observe team and interactions - understand team journey and servant leadership required across it.
  4. Know what matters - Measure and Improve the team in their self-organization and be equipped to deal with conflicts.
  5. Be Curious and Cautious - Explore Facilitation and avoid the trap of metrics

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understanding the CHEF (Coach, Hands-On, Empathy, and Facilitation) within each Scrum Master.
  2. Enabling visualization of what matters through a floor test or bench test.
  3. The pattern of team's lifecycle based on Tuckman model and what servant leadership support is required at each stage
  4. Thomas –Kilman Conflict Modes - understanding patterns of response to conflict
  5. Exploring facilitation from Liberating Structures to Management 3.0
