HOW TO FACE DEATH (IN ENGLISH) - Class

'It's not that I'm afraid to die. I just don't want to be there when it happens.'

So opined Woody Allen, capturing something of our ambivalence about the one thing about which we can all be absolutely and irrefutably certain: we will die. On the one hand, it is almost commonplace to say that suffering is what we fear, not annihilation. But on the other, anyone who has experience the death of a loved one, or faced death themselves, will know that it is no trivial incident. We might even be a death-denying culture, if the way that we cloth death and keep it out of sight is anything to go by.

And yet, as Wittgenstein put it, death is not an event in life, by which he meant it is very hard to get a handle on. So how can we think about it, what should we make of it, what resources are there to help us deal with it? On this evening, we will look at what philosophers and theologians, film-makers and poets have said about death. We will ask whether there is such a thing as a good death and how we might mourn the loss of others well. We will see if we can catch a glimpse of what J.M Barrie called 'an awfully big adventure.'

ABOUT CORE CLASSES

Our classes have been designed to give useful insights around the big themes in life. You’ll be challenged to think deeply about the issues that matter most, and provided with a space to share your thoughts, ideas and experiences with other curious, open-minded individuals.

These sessions are designed by experts and taught by members of our faculty. They include a mix of lecture, conversation and group activity. Optional homework is provided for those interested in further study.

COURSE LEADER

Cori Moore is a Berlin-based innovation facilitator who strives to shape constructive interactions between people, places & things. Drawing on her background in Psychology and Theatre she uses participative formats to foster meaningful dialogues and hone out human-centric insights. As one of the founding members of the re.designing death movement, she has spent the last few years running workshops and interviewing people about their experiences and attitudes towards death & dying, something she says has been an extremely uplifting exercise. We may live in a death denying culture, but Cori Moore can attest that people are often more than willing to talk about death, they just need the right atmosphere to do so.
