‘Hold for Three’ is a sonic performance which explores the relationship between machines and the body. Kayla Elrod and Lottie Sebes explore the sonic capacities of various modified bellows, approaching these objects as if they were external, prosthetic lungs.
The bellows are combined with other objects to create musical instruments, doubling as props, costumes and sets which guide the performers' actions; linking body and machine. The cyclical intake and expulsion of air through the bellows and the lungs are amplified and modulated to explore the natural rhythm and texture of the breath.
As the development of new digital technologies further entangles itself into our everyday lives and bodies, ‘Hold for Three’ reflects on a much longer history of mechanical machines which have sought to mimic the human form. By imagining new musical uses for outdated technology, the work questions what other possible futures emerge from the human-technology relationship.
