Raising awareness and insight is a core coaching competency (AC, ICF, EMCC), and is perceived to be important for facilitating behavioural change in our clients and that, in turn, relies on the coach’s self-awareness. However, there is no consistent agreement about what characterises self-awareness and it is often confused with similar concepts such as self-consciousness and self-knowledge.
Julia realised during her Masters in Executive Coaching that the core to developing effectiveness as a coach lies in increasing self-awareness, however she quickly realised that she didn’t really know what self-awareness really is. This led her on a journey to research and discover what exactly is self-awareness, what role it plays in coach development and how coaches develop it.
About Dr Julia Carden:
Julia is a visiting tutor on the Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching and Professional Certificate in Coaching Supervision. She’s an accredited Master Practitioner Coach with the EMCC, Professional Certified Coach with the ICF and an accredited Coaching Supervisor. Outside of her tutoring role at Henley Julia runs a Coaching and Coaching Supervision Practice, working with a cross-section of leaders across the public and private sector. Julia works by focusing on helping her clients gain greater self-awareness, encouraging them to explore hidden potential and aspects of their character to be at their best. She draws on a wide range of psychological dimensions in her work; in particular Time to Think, Gestalt and Psychodynamic approaches. She is passionate about her own CPD and regularly takes part in coaching supervision and engages in on-going learning.
