1. Artificial Intelligence Meets Real Life: Living on the Edge (Robert Lieck)
Machine learning and artificial intelligence have an enormous potential in practical applications. In recent years ready-made toolkits have become more and more available to be used by anyone at their convenience. However, the interplay between the technical realm of algorithms and the real world is not always intuitive and it may be difficult to understand what is going on behind the scenes. This bears the risk of undesired outcomes and side effects that may have a severe financial and social impact.
I will try to provide a basic intuition of what it means to apply machine learning methods to real-world data and point out some of the most important caveats to keep in mind.
2. Giving Personal Assistants an Appealing Human Appearance (Eduard Zell)
The communication with intelligent personal assistants like Cortana, Alexa or Google Now is strongly inspired by human-to-human communication, but is missing a humanoid appearance. While it is more natural to talk to alive creatures than to a box with a computer, designing convincing androids or virtual characters is a very challenging task, especially because stylized appearances are possible. This talk will give guidelines to create convincing characters and address common misbeliefs in robotics and computer graphics.
3. Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing - AI understanding human language (Nils Reimers)
Major achievements have been achieved recently in understanding and producing human language using AI. Even though there is still a long way ahead of us, until machines have the same capability of deeply understanding language, we will face more and more systems that listen to us and that are able to produce meaningful answers. Systems that are able to understand what we want will revolutionize how we interact with technology, how we search for information and how we interact with companies. In conclusion, it will transform wide ranges of industries.
