Schedule

13.00 Doors

13:20 Welcome and Introduction
Ioulia Isserlis (VRBB, Another World VR), Tim Rittmann (Booster Space)

13:30 Virtual Production is VR a revolution of film making?
Keynote and Fireside Chat with Caleb Deschanel (Cinematographer, The Lion King)

Disney’s stunningly beautiful “The Lion King” was shot using a virtual film set. A game engine and Virtual Reality hardware catapulted director Jon Favreau, DOP Caleb Deschanel and key team members from a storage hall in LA to the African Savannah in seconds. In a keynote speech followed by a fireside chat, Caleb Deschanel, a six-time Oscar-nominated cameraman, talks about the incredible possibilities offered by a virtual production film set. He will give insights in how Virtual Reality headsets can be set up for collaborative workflows and real time production.

14:30 Immersive content production for multiple channels
Talk by Peter Popp (CEO, Reef & Softmachine)

The Munich based production and distribution house Reef is specialized in Full Dome Experiences, but more and more keeps on looking for more sustainable and wider spread means of production. What works in VR may also work in full dome 2D and 3D, and the usage of more than just one ecosystem can make immersive content production more profitable.

15:00 Hot Drinks & Recreation

15:30 Dreamscape – Pushing the limits of immersive entertainment
Talk by Caecilia Charbonnier (Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer, Dreamscape Immersive)

Breaking new ground in the way we experience story, VR is also becoming an important marketing tool for traditional media. Popular franchises and independents alike are using immersive content to attract and engage audiences by expanding or deepening their story universes. In this panel, we’ll hear how VR is being deployed to bolster and better monetize intellectual property.

16:00 1st Step – This View Changes Everything

Talk by Maria Courtial (Co-founder and Managing Director, FaberCourtial)
50 years ago, the Apollo missions were an exceptional adventure – FaberCourtial’s desire was to celebrate them in an extraordinary way through VR. The VR specialists from Damstadt, Germany wanted to give the film a feeling of authenticity by not only using 3D animation, but also live-action astronauts in stereo 3D. Besides the challenge that everything had to be scientifically accurate, all the single steps of the mission had to be produced, the best “perspectives” to be selected. A mad ride within a tight schedule.

16:30 VR in the year 2020 – between disruptive power and unfulfilled expectation
Panel Discussion with Caecilia Charbonnier (CEO Dreamscape VR), Caleb Deschanel (Director of Photography, The Lion King)

With so called Virtual Production, which is shooting CGI scenes in a complete virtual film set, the development of Virtual Reality has seen some unexpected turns. Rather than disrupting the way movies are watched, immersive technologies are radically going to change the way movies are made. But what about the promise that VR is going to be the next big thing in home entertainment? How is Location Based Entertainment holding up in 2020? And generally speaking: Is this year going to be the year that VR is finally making a break through?

17:15 And this was just the beginning – insights of pioneering VR mass operations
Stephan Heininger (Head of VR/AR, Telekom Deutschland), Axel Steinkuhle (CEO, evrbit)

In order to make fascinating Virtual Reality worlds accessible for all people, the threshold must be low. In 2019, evrbit and Telekom Deutschland took entered movie theatres with 100 Oculus Go headsets per location. Viewers could watch cinematic VR shorts from their seats, the audio was provided by the cinema’s sound system. In their presentation Axel Steinkuhle and Stephan Heininger will share their experiences of the sold out Magenta VR Cinema Tour. Starting with the film selection, the marketing campaign and the communication with the cinemas, the on-site deployment, the target groups and the subsequent analysis.
