DSSG Berlin Data Dive March 2017
Freitag, 17. März 2017, 19:00 Uhr-Sonntag, 19. März 2017, 14:00 Uhr (MEZ)
Data Science for Social Good Berlin is back with our second Data Dive! It will take place on March 17 - 19 at the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt near Hauptbahnhof.
For our first Data Dive in October 2015 more than sixty (!) data scientists joined us for a weekend of solving challenging data problems together with our non-profit partners Jambo Bukoba, streetfootballworld and DataLook. You can read more about the event here (in German).
This time we are partnering with Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Cancer Society) to help with the cataloguing of scientific literature on cancer and with SchulePLUS to help them enable kids to get access to good internships regardless of their parents’ background and socio-economic status. Learn more about our partners in a moment!
What is a Data Dive?
A Data Dive is an event that partners up curious, clever, quantitative data scientists (that’s you!) with curious, clever, empathetic non profit people (you’ll love them!) to take a stab at real analytical challenges our partner non-profit organizations are facing. Over the weekend you’ll have a chance to step away from your regular problem sets, contribute to a good cause, and meet other socially minded problem solvers.
Who should sign up?
For the challenges our nonprofit partners are facing the following skills would be especially useful:
German cancer society: NLP, topic modeling/text clustering, text visualisation, experiences with scientific publishing
SchulePLUS: data visualisation, text pre-processing (stemming, string matching etc), working with google adwords data
If you are not experienced in these areas, but are smart and eager to pick up new skills, don’t hesitate to register! We are a diverse and inclusive group. Please come, no matter your race, gender and sexual orientation. We support the http://berlincodeofconduct.org.
What do I need to dive?
Bring your own computer and all software you might need! We provide the data, internet access, power, Git repositories, Wikis, AWS credits, etc.
The Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Cancer Society) is Germany's largest oncological society/association. The knowledge and information management team at DKG team is currently building a knowledge base covering studies and meta analyses published in the last ten years on the topic of solid cancers like breast and colorectal or prostate cancer. To this end, they scan the medical databases OVID and EBCSO, extract publication metadata and pdf, and add keywords identifying the tumor and focus (e.g. diagnostic, therapy) of the studies. The knowledge base is currently being used by counselors working at the Deutsche Krebshilfe phone hot-line for patients and their relatives. The team is interested to evaluate whether the keywording process can be (partially) automated using a classification model.
SchulePLUS is a social business that aims to help make the access to education and early career opportunities equally attainable for every child, and to foster creative and practice-oriented education. Internships in particular are a way for school students to get to know different career opportunities (pupils in Germany are required to do one or several internships of a few weeks for graduating). For this reason, SchulePLUS has built the platform https://www.schülerpraktikum.de/ that helps school kids find internships with local companies and organisations. The platform started in summer 2015 and already today has 75,000 unique visitors and 500,000 page impressions per month. Thanks to Google Grants, the organisation has been collecting data about google searches and adwords for the last 12 months. SchulePLUS wants to analyse this data to enable them to operate more efficiently and impact-oriented, e.g. what kind of assistance do pupils need when applying to an internship (and producing guides and video material accordingly) or identifying regions where there are too few internship spots.
Friday, March 17th
19:00 - 19:30 Check-In
19:30 NPO Introductions
On Friday night you’ll be introduced to the participating NPOs, learn about what they are doing and the problem they are facing. Afterwards you can mix and mingle to chat about the projects and maybe already find people you want to work with over the weekend.
Saturday, March 18th
09:00 Registration & breakfast
13:00 Lunch break
19:00 Evening snack
22:00 Doors close
On Saturday you’ll chose projects you want to work on and form teams. Our Data Ambassadors will give initial guidance on the data sets and will manage the projects throughout the day. A representative from each NPO will be available to help with questions and you’ll have regular check-ins with them to discuss intermediate results.
Sunday, March 19th
09:00 Doors open & breakfast
12:00 Final presentations begin
You will wrap up projects and prepare final presentations. You’ll present prototypes or slides or… just whatever you came up with based on the data. The partner nonprofits will also have an opportunity to ask questions. Presentations will be short (~10min) so that every team can present.
Food & Drinks
We will provide an evening snack on Friday, breakfast, lunch and an evening snack on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday; with fruits, coffee and drinks available throughout. There will be vegetarian/vegan options available for all meals, but please let us know if you have any other dietary needs, restrictions, or food allergies. firstname.lastname@example.org

This sounds like DataKind?!
Oh, glad you noticed! We’re not affiliated to DataKind. We’re friends with them and we are bringing the same concept to Germany.
