About this Event

Conversation Design is a Team Sport (and how the playing field shapes the rules)

Dr. Dexter Zavalza, Conversation Design Lead at Deloitte Consulting

Talk Summary

Conversation design and convo AI are hot right now. So hot, in fact, that in the race to build relevant skills, land a role, or climb the thought leadership ranks, the whole industry can seem like a free-for-all where brilliant individuals birth genius, golden-egg products on their own.

The reality is quite the opposite: conversation design, my friend, is a team sport shaped by the playing fields where it takes place. This talk will break down how and why you should approach the conversation design field with a deep awareness of your conversational AI teammates, clients, and partners and how to collaborate effectively with each of them to maximize your design's potential and build great conversational products and services.

Speaker's Bio

A linguistics-trained conversation designer and content strategist with experience across the conversational AI and digital content landscape, from SMS and chatbots to IVR and VUIs and everything in between. I'm also a UX generalist versed in end-to-end UX design, content and research best practices.

PhD by education, GSD by personality and data-driven like your autonomous vehicle, I currently strategize, design and write for conversational interfaces...when I'm not wrangling my kids, chasing surf, hobby-building multimodal VUIs or mentoring junior colleagues.

In recent years I've:

• Led an enterprise content design team and driven omni-channel communications strategy for mobile-first customers at a Fortune 20

• Strategized, designed, written, and architected conversational UX flows and content for enterprise virtual assistants across IVR, web, mobile and SMS channels

• Led design reviews and served as a conversation design and UX writing SME for internal, client, and partner UX designers

• Published scholarly books with Duke University Press (USA) and Iberoamericana/Vervuert (Spain), the former getting coverage in The New York Times and on NPR

• Published in English and Spanish for scholarly presses, media channels and EdTech platforms in the United States, Latin America, Australasia and Europe

• Transcribed, annotated and POS tagged thousands of manuscript folios for academic research

• Developed and revised applied linguistics pedagogy for foreign language instructors at the world's best public university
