About this event

The ethics of voice-first interface: What's at stake and how to deal with it

Dr. Olya Kudina, Assistant Professor, Ethics/Philosophy of Technology, TU Delft, the Netherlands

Talk Summary

In this talk, Olya will reflect on the fast spread of the voice-first interfaces and discuss the ethical issues that accompany its introduction. She will specifically focus on voice assistants in the smart speakers, the most widely adopted to date voice-first devices, such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google’s Home, keeping in mind that the insights will be transferrable to other types of voice-first technologies. Olya will position technologies as the mediators of user’s experiences, also when morality is concerned. Regarding ethics, she will adopt the model of accompaniment rather than assessment to show how ethics helps to both frame the questions and provide options for solutions to mitigate certain concerns. For instance, Olya will show how voice assistants help to shape specific moral ideas, actions and values in their users, as well as which options for responsible voice-first design emerge in this regard. The goal of this talk is to show how ethics seamlessly accompanies our daily lives and design choices and how to use this for crafting meaningful interactions with voice assistants.
