The city – with its public and private spaces – is the built framework for the everyday life of the largest and growing part of the European population. This metropolitan built environment characterizes our behaviour and influences our health. Targeted urban planning can actively prevent poor air quality, noise pollution, and "heat islands". "Preventative urbanism" will take the health of city dwellers into account as a fundamental factor in the planning and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Patient-oriented healthcare infrastructure will play a special role in the fabric of the healthy city. How do we experience and use urban space? How does it influence us? Which potentials does it offer? How do we integrate health care services? And which architectural and planning options do we have at hand to sustainably shape the city into a healthy, social and cultural environment? Prof. Christine Nickl-Weller discusses these topics with special guests in the foyer of the historical state-run media centre, Berlin.
