WHY GO

Ever wanted to visit the setting of the fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm? Legend has it they were inspired by Germany’s Black Forest (Schwarzwald) — the spectacular mountain range in Baden-Württemberg.

The Black Forest gets its name from the oppressive canopy of evergreens looming above the forest floor. Home to elaborate cuckoo clocks, striking half-timbered houses, ruined castles and quaint towns, the Black Forest is a magical land full of cultural traditions.

Starting early on Thursday morning, we take a train down to Triberg known as the Cuckoo capital of the world including a visit to the World’s largest cuckoo clock along with a short hike to one of Germany’s highest waterfalls (time permitting). We then head to the cute little town of Schönau where we will be staying for the next 2 nights in a hotel. Schönau is located in the heart of the black forest and at the foot of the Belchen, the most beautiful panoramic mountain in the southern Black Forest.

On the second day, we hike to the summit of the Belchen mountain on some parts of the Belchensteig that has been voted the most beautiful walking trail in Germany. Belchen is one of the most beautiful mountains and the third highest mountain in Black forest (Schwarz Wald), offering panoramic views of the Rhine and on a clear day all the way to the Alps far away. Once at the summit, we capture the stunning sights of Black forest before grabbing a bite/drink at the historic Belchenhaus and then making our way down to another historic hut Gasthof Belchen-Multen and possibly having a “black forest cake” before catching the bus to head back to our hotel.

The third day we make our way to Baden-Baden to explore this beautiful town filled with stunning French architecture with the option of a hike that takes you along ruins from the Middle Ages, offering a unique panoramic view of Baden-Baden and the Rhine valley finishing in the sunny town of Ebersteinburg and then heading to Heidelberg where we will be staying for the night.

On the last day we will explore Heidelberg, one of Germany’s most beautiful towns where we visit the impressive castle ruins, castle gardens for a fantastic view of the city. We take a walk through the baroque-style Old Town and view the historic stone bridge and then take a short hike in the Philosopher's walk for further impressive views of Heidelberg. We wrap up our trip and head back to the station to catch our train back to Berlin arriving late on Sunday night.

Highlights of the four-day trip include:

  • Discover Triberg (Cuckoo Clock Capital): Known as the unofficial cuckoo capital of the world and also houses the world’s largest cuckoo clock. Triberg is also famous for one of Germany's highest waterfalls with the area around the entrance to the waterfalls being reminiscent of Disneyland.
  • Discover Heidelberg: Heidelberg is the epitome of German romanticism. It contains one of the most popular castle ruins in Germany, this town is filled with majestic cityscapes and a palpable historic atmosphere . Heidelberg is consistently voted among one of Germany’s most beautiful towns.
  • Belchensteig: Voted as Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail (as per wandermagazin.de) reaching the summit of Belchen mountain. Belchen is the most beautiful mountain in the Black Forest, offering a fantastic panoramic view of the Rhine Valley, the Vosges and, in good weather, even as far as the Alps.
  • Ebersteinburg Trail: Varied and exciting trail that takes you along ruins from the Middle Ages, hidden forest paths and the large rock pillars of the Battert. The cliffs always promise a fantastic view over the city of Baden-Baden through to Alsace. In addition you will find a mystical “rock bridge”. Not without reason, this trail was named after the old castle Eberstein.
  • Discover Baden Baden: Along with Heidelberg, considered one of the most beautiful spots in Black Forest, this 19th–century town is filled with striking french architecture and old-world luxury.
  • Philosopher’s Walk (Heidelberg): Known as Philopher’s walk because of the many philosophers who enjoyed the path for its solitude, natural beauty, and great views of Heidelberg. This walk has also inspired the famous German poets Joseph von Eichendorff and Friedrich Hölderlin in their writings.
  • Heidelberg Funicular Railway (optional): Get on this magical train ride that has been in operation for over 100 years taking you past the Heidelberg palace to the top of the Königstuhl (King’s Chair) Mountain. From here, you can even see far across the Rhine lowlands as far as the Palatinate wine route from the vantage point of the Königstuhl.
