About this event

Hi, my name is Jeff. I am a sociologist with focus on human sexualities, and in this online version of my guided tour "Berlin's History of Sex", we'll dive together into the history of sexual science and sex life in Berlin without the need of leaving the comfort of your home. Together, in a private online experience over Zoom for you alone or you and your friends/family/colleagues, we'll discover, among many other things, Dr Magnus Hirschfeld's institute of sexual science, past-Berlin's infamous Eldorado Club, as well as present-day Berlin's Kit Kat Club. We'll start in the late 19th Century and go through the Roaring Twenties and the downfall of sexual freedom at the hand of the Nazis. We'll cover the resurrection after the war in a divided Berlin, as well as the current state today.

Together, we’ll dive into the history of sexual science and sex life in Berlin. This is a unique and one-of-a-kind experience, fully packed with lots of historical images and videos you usually wouldn’t find in a history book.

After a brief introduction and getting to know each other, we’ll explore the diversity of sexual life in the Roaring Twenties in Berlin, including:

  • sex work and kinky life in the 20s;
  • Berlin’s sex and nightlife in the 20s;
  • famous lesbian singer Claire Waldoff and lesbian nightlife;
  • the home of gay British writer Christopher Isherwood, whose Berlin stories led to a world-famous musical;
  • gender diversity in world-famous Eldorado clubs, that even saw high Nazi officials as visitors;
  • Dr Magnus Hirschfeld‘s story – one of the world’s first sexual scientists;
  • the foundation of the world’s first queer rights organization;
  • the world’s first institute of sexual science, including the world’s first sex museum;
  • the early trans*, intersex, gender non-conforming and non-binary rights movements;
  • Lili Elbe, who underwent one of the world’s first gender-affirming surgeries;
  • the eradication of sexual freedom by Nazi Germany in 1933.
  • Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, the „world’s first gay man“;
  • the emergence of nudist culture;
  • the mass murder of LGBTIQs under Nazi Germany;
  • the slow resurrection of sexual freedom after WWII;
  • the emergence of the AIDS epidemic and how differently West and East Germany/Berlin dealt with it;
  • the districts of Nollendorfplatz and Kottbusser Tor, some of the world’s biggest LGBTIQ centres;
  • and the history of current clubs of sexual liberty, including the Kit Kat, Berghain, and Lab.

At any time, you can ask questions. Additionally, we’ll do a quiz and will crown a winner at the end of the experience. You’ll leave this experience with knowledge you won’t find in most history books, as well as with a greater appreciation for sexual freedom and sexual rights.

About your guide:

I am a sociologist, and I focussed my studies on gender, queer theory, social justice, and sexualities, as well as post-colonial and human-animal-studies. Currently, I am additionally studying gender studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin, and I am a self-employed tourist guide, as well as a freelance speaker and writer about human sexualities. I have been working and volunteering for several sexual health and human rights NGOs, including Germany’s National AIDS Service Organization (Deutsche Aidshilfe). I have been living in Berlin since 2014, and I have been fascinated by sex for more than a decade – so with me, you’ll surely get the facts about sex you never knew before.

"I liked the interactive aspect. Highly recommended!"
