Artificial intelligence - playfully explained to children and parents

--- german version below ----

What? Artificial Intelligence - Understanding and programming for parents and children

When? January 21, 2019, 15:00 - 17:00

Where? Displacement Coworking Cafe, Winterfeldtstrasse 21, 10781 Berlin

By programming and playing with smart toys. We invite you and your children to an afternoon of hands-on workshops.

In order to make Artificial Intelligence understandable and programmable for children, we will introduce the education platform " Cognimates ", developed by Stefania Druga at the MIT Research Institute. The platform is open source and publicly available for free.

No prior technical knowledge is required for participation in this event! We are looking forward to a diverse participation!

Motivation of the workshop:

Despite the growing presence of artificial intelligence in children's everyday lives, their understanding of this technology has not been sufficiently explored. The aim of the workshop is therefore to understand how children think about intelligent agents and to further evaluate the educational platform 'Cognimates'.

We hope to see how children use intelligent technologies to enhance our own concepts of technology design . By programming and playing with smart devices, we hope to give families a better understanding of AI technologies.

We want to promote confidence in and knowledge of technology, and thus lay a foundation for future education about technologies.

Examples of activities of the workshops:

  • Programming the Cozmo robot
  • Programming computer games that can perceive human emotions or other objects
  • Art with artificial intelligence
  • Talk to the Vector Robot about 'Alexa'

More examples of projects can be found here

Purpose of the Workshop

Even though the presence of AI in our daily life is quickly increasing, children’s understanding of artificial intelligence is extremely under-researched. Therefore, the purpose of the workshops is to evaluate the platform “Cognimates” (cognimates.me) and to understand what children think about intelligent agents. We hope to observe the way that children interact with these technologies to inform our own designs of technological devices. In programming and playing with robots and AI devices, we hope to help families to gain a better understanding of AI technology. Therefore, we hope to promote trust in and knowledge of technology, in order to provide a sound foundation for future technology education.

Examples activities from the workshop

  • Program Cozmo Robot
  • Make various computer games that can recognize your emotions or various objects
  • Make Art with AI
  • Talk to Vector robot or with Alexa

More examples of projects here

During the workshop, we will ask you questions about your background and any interactions with AI that your child has had (if any). Your child will spend time learning about different examples of artificial intelligence in their everyday world and playing with the Cognimates platform. The robots are capable of speaking, making gestures, moving forwards and backward, and sensing things about the environment like how close objects are and whether the lights are on. At the end of the session, we will ask the child questions about what he or she learned, though, and felt about the interaction.

The workshops will be run by a team of students and researchers from the Critical AI Lab at Weizenbaum Institute. When taking part in the workshop, we need your consent for video recording and audio recording. The data will not be distributed further than data analysis unless you have given your consent

Thank you!
